In London, Sarah Kyolaba opened a restaurant called Krishna’s Restaurant in 1997, which became a hub for people eager to experience Ugandan cuisine.
The restaurant featured traditional dishes such as stewed goat and barbecued meat, offering a unique taste of Uganda’s rich culinary heritage to the local community.
Despite the challenges of starting a business in a new country, Sarah managed to carve out a niche for herself in London’s diverse food scene.
However, the restaurant’s journey was not without its obstacles. In the same year it opened, Krishna’s Restaurant was temporarily shut down after health inspectors discovered unsanitary conditions in the kitchen, including the presence of cockroaches and mice.
Sarah, though facing potential legal consequences, pleaded guilty to the violations and avoided imprisonment, receiving only a conditional discharge.
Despite this setback, she persisted in running the restaurant and continued to serve her homeland’s dishes to her customers.
Sarah’s restaurant was one of the few places in London where people could sample authentic Ugandan flavors, which reflected both her cultural pride and resilience.
Over the years, Krishna’s Restaurant became a beloved establishment among Ugandans and other patrons looking to explore different international cuisines.
Beyond her restaurant, Sarah’s life story was deeply intertwined with that of Idi Amin, whom she married in 1975 after meeting him in 1974 when she was just 19 years old.
Despite the complexity of their relationship and Amin’s controversial rule, Sarah remained devoted to him, even after they were exiled following his ousting from power in 1979.
After separating from Amin in 1982, Sarah lived in Germany before settling in London, where she would go on to open her restaurant and later run a hair salon.
In the years following Amin’s death in 2003, Sarah continued to speak highly of him, remembering him as a “true African hero” and “wonderful father.”
She passed away in 2015 at the age of 60 after battling cancer, leaving behind a legacy marked by both her connection to a controversial figure and her determination to rebuild her life in London.
