Texas Rep. Al Green (D) confirmed that he’s “working on” articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump after he was removed from the president’s joint address to Congress.
On Tuesday (March 4), Green was removed from the House Chamber on Capitol Hill for standing in protest to Trump’s speech to lawmakers.
Green was waving his cane at the president when Speaker Mike Johnson warned lawmakers to maintain “decorum in the House and to cease any further disruptions.” Johnson ordered Green to take a seat before directing the House Sergeant at Arms to escort him out of the chamber.
Following his removal, Green told reporters on Tuesday that he had interrupted Trump’s speech to protest against the administration’s “desire to cut Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security.” The Texas Democrat also confirmed that he would be continuing his bid to impeach the president.
“I’m working on my articles of impeachment. This president is unfit. He should not hold the office—34 felony convictions, two times impeached,” Green said.
Green initially announced his plans to launch “the movement to impeach the president” last month on the House floor. The announcement came after Trump suggested that the U.S. should take control of the Gaza Strip.
“Ethnic cleansing in Gaza is not a joke, especially when it emanates from the president of the United States,” Green said. “I rise to announce that I will bring articles of impeachment against the president for dastardly deeds proposed and dastardly deeds done.”
With Republicans controlling the House and Senate, it’s very unlikely that Trump’s impeachment would be successful. Trump was impeached twice by the Democrat-controlled House during his first term but was acquitted by the Senate in both cases.
