The government, through the Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control, has destroyed 158,000 unclaimed passports, valued at 40 billion shillings. This action was taken due to limited storage space and the increasing number of uncollected documents.

According to Simon Mundeyi, spokesperson for the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the decision was necessary to manage the backlog of unclaimed passports. He explained that space constraints have made it difficult to store the growing number of documents.

In addition, another 72,580 passports are scheduled for destruction. Among these are 60,000 passports that were returned by labour export companies. These companies had initially applied for the documents but later failed to send workers abroad as planned, leading them to return the unused passports to the authorities.

The Directorate has issued a six-month deadline for passport holders to collect their documents before they are permanently destroyed. Officials are urging individuals who have not yet collected their passports to do so promptly. Once the deadline passes, the passports will be irreversibly disposed of.
