Locals in Kalangala District woke up to severe devastation on Saturday following an overnight cyclone that swept through the island.
At least four people were confirmed dead in the morning hours, according to local reports. The powerful winds razed dozens of homes and destroyed crop gardens across the region.
Among the structures destroyed was Kalangala’s main police station, which was completely leveled. Media reports suggest that up to 300 houses were flattened in the disaster.
The locals have urgently called on the government to provide immediate assistance.
A devastating hailstorm also struck the Kalangala District Police at Bugala Island, killing three people. The storm, which originated from the eastern side of Kalangala, caused significant damage to the police barracks, leaving almost all officers’ accommodations destroyed, with part of the station’s administration roof torn off.
Regional Police Spokesman Twaha Kasirye confirmed that three lives were lost in the tragedy. The deceased have been identified as D/Sgt. Mujasi Michael and two civilians, whose identities are yet to be determined. Several other officers and members of the community sustained serious injuries.
The injured personnel have been rushed to Kalangala HCIV for medical attention, while the bodies have been retrieved and transported to the Kalangala Hospital mortuary.
