Dr. Jan Nakitende Mukiibi is the latest social media sensation and here’s what you need to know about the beautiful medic.
Unknown to many Ugandans, Dr Mukiibi is a household name among the Ugandan diaspora community particularly in the United Kingdom.
Beauty Queen
Jan won a beauty crown not just by social media admirers but in real life. At the age of 19, she was crowned the Miss Uganda United Kingdom beauty pageant winner.
She held the title from 2017-18. The beauty crown propelled her to celebrity status among the Ugandan community in the United Kingdom.
Culturally Grounded
Despite growing up in the United Kingdom, Jan says she speaks fluent Luganda, her mother tongue.
Born in a family of four to Mr and Mrs Janet Mukiibi, Jan attributes her strong cultural grounding to her strict parents who instilled the importance of culture as they were being raised in the United Kingdom.
According to Dr Jan, her parents placed fines for any family member who spoke English while at home. The default language at home is Luganda.
“Both my parents are from Uganda. My mum is from Mityana and my dad is from Luweero,” she said recently.
“There is a golden rule at home that the moment you step at home, there is no more speaking English. Each English word you speak attracts a fine,” she told Daily Monitor.
Content Creator
Dr Jan loves social media content creation and believes that it helps her balance her social life with her demanding medical career.
“Content creation is actually a passion of mine I started before joining medical school. I just found a way to keep that balance. I think it’s all about prioritising. I think it’s healthy to maintain that balance and social media creation is something I enjoy doing outside work,” she says.
A Doctor
According to her LinkedIn profile, Dr Jan works with the National Health Service in The UK and graduated in 2023.
She is currently in Uganda as an NHS Global Health Fellow, a partnership with the Ministry of Health, Uganda focusing on enhancing mental health care.
Fashion Influencer
Dr Jan views herself as a fashion influencer. It is this love for fashion that drew her into pageantry as a teenager.
