Several candidates were injured during the women’s prison police recruitment drive in India’s Pune on Friday after a stampede broke out due to poor crowd management.
The incident occurred at the Shivajinagar Police Headquarters when an iron gate collapsed under pressure from the large crowd.
Thousands of young women had gathered from the early hours, hoping to secure one of the 513 available positions. As the crowd grew, some candidates tried to push through the gate, causing panic. The sudden rush led to a stampede, and many women suffered injuries, particularly to their legs.
Parents present at the scene expressed outrage over the lack of proper arrangements. Some confronted police officials, blaming them for the chaos.
The women’s police recruitment process had been delayed since 2022–23. While other police recruitment drives were completed and appointment letters issued, the Pune women’s prison police recruitment remained pending.
Many candidates had spent months preparing for the physical tests, but the unexpected chaos has now raised concerns about the upcoming stages of the selection process.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident or the next steps in the recruitment process.
