National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate Akiso Benjamin has emerged as the 21st Guild President of Kyambogo University after securing a decisive victory. Akiso polled 3,585 votes, significantly outpacing his closest rival Tony Bwete, who garnered 2,340 votes, while Emmanuel Andama came in third with 1,103 votes.
Akiso’s win has been widely celebrated as a triumph for the “common students,” who believe in his ability to champion their interests. Addressing his supporters after the victory, he reaffirmed his commitment to addressing the surcharge policy, which has been one of the most pressing financial burdens affecting students.
“This victory belongs to the students of Kyambogo University. It is a statement that the voices of the students cannot be suppressed. My first priority will be tackling the surcharge policy, ensuring fairness and justice for every student,” Akiso declared.
Election Day Tensions & Student Resistance
The election process was not without controversy. Earlier in the day, tensions flared as police attempted to arrest Akiso Benjamin, leading to unrest among students who resisted the move. The incident underscored the increasing friction between student activism and state enforcement agencies in university politics.
Despite the challenges, the National Unity Platform candidate’s victory is seen as as a turning point in student governance at Kyambogo University.
Now, as Akiso prepares to assume office, expectations are high among students who have entrusted him with their mandate. His ability to deliver on key promises, particularly on policies affecting student welfare, will define his tenure as the 21st Guild President of Kyambogo University.
