As Uganda approaches a major transition in its energy sector, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development has assured citizens that the widely used Yaka prepaid electricity system will remain fully operational even after Umeme’s exit on March 31, 2025.

Government-Owned System to Remain Uninterrupted

Yaka, a government-owned system financed through end-user tariffs, will continue functioning without any disruption. Customers will still be able to purchase Yaka units through major telecom providers like MTN and Airtel, as well as FINTECH platforms. However, Umeme’s Touch Pay platform will be decommissioned, meaning all transactions must be done through Yaka’s approved channels.

For those worried about their prepaid balance, the Ministry clarified that all unutilized Yaka units purchased before the transition will remain valid, ensuring that customers do not experience losses.

Same Meters, Same Tariffs, Same Convenience

There will be no changes to meter numbers, as the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) will take over operations. The current Umeme service centers will also remain functional under UEDCL management, ensuring that customers can access assistance as needed.

Additionally, there will be no changes to electricity tariffs, as these are regulated by the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA). UEDCL will continue implementing the existing tariff structures without alterations.

Smooth Transition for Postpaid Customers

For postpaid electricity users, payment systems will also remain unchanged. Customers will still be able to make payments through existing channels until further notice. To enhance customer service, UEDCL will maintain its digital platforms, including WhatsApp, Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and YouTube, allowing users to access real-time updates and assistance.

No Need to Worry – The Lights Will Stay On

With the March 2025 transition drawing closer, the Ministry has reassured Ugandans that electricity services will remain stable and uninterrupted. The handover process has been designed to be smooth, ensuring that there are no disruptions in service, meter numbers, prepaid balances, or payment methods.

In short, Yaka is here to stay—and so is uninterrupted power for Ugandan homes and businesses.
