Members of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) are raising concerns after noticing strange activity on Dr. Kizza Besigye’s WhatsApp account.
The Ugandan opposition leader is currently being held at Luzira Prison without access to his phone.
According to Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, PFF members were shocked when messages from Besigye’s phone appeared in their WhatsApp group.
“We were surprised to see messages from his account, yet he has been in prison without his phone,” Lukwago said.
Wasswa Birigwa, another veteran opposition politician, also pointed out changes to Besigye’s Instagram profile picture.
These updates happened while his phone was supposed to be in the hands of prison authorities.
Besigye was arrested in Nairobi, Kenya, and taken to Uganda, where his phone was confiscated.
His close ally, Hajj Obeid Lutale, also lost his phone to security officers during the same operation.
Government lawyers have now asked for permission to access data from both phones.
The court hearing to decide on this request is set for April 4, 2025.
However, PFF members are worried that someone is already using the devices illegally.
Prison rules clearly state that detainees’ belongings should not be tampered with until their release.
Opposition supporters fear that unknown individuals could be using Besigye’s phone to spread false information or spy on his communication.
The Uganda Prisons Service has denied any involvement in the suspicious WhatsApp activities.
Officials insist that they have no connection to the recent messages seen from Besigye’s account.
Lukwago has called for an immediate investigation into the matter.
“If his phone is in safe custody, how is it being used? This is very suspicious,” he stated.
Birigwa also believes that Besigye’s phone has been hacked or accessed without permission.
