A heavy downpour on Tuesday mid-morning led to severe flooding on Jinja Road in Kampala, causing significant traffic disruptions and posing a risk to commuters.
The rainfall, which lasted over an hour, overwhelmed drainage systems, resulting in waterlogged streets and halted traffic in various parts of the capital.
As captured in striking photographs shared onlines, the floodwaters on Jinja Road reached alarming levels, with cars submerged and buses struggling to navigate through the rising waters.
Pedestrians were forced to wade through knee-deep water as they attempted to continue their journeys, while many commuters were stranded, waiting for the waters to recede.
The flooding, which started around 10 a.m., brought the busy road to a standstill, especially around the Namanve area.
Authorities and emergency services responded quickly to assist affected individuals and vehicles, though the extent of the damage to infrastructure remains unclear.
Local residents expressed frustration at the city’s inability to manage heavy rainfall effectively, citing blocked drains and the inadequate drainage systems as contributing factors to the flood’s severity.
“Every time it rains, we face this same problem,” said one local shopkeeper along Jinja Road. “We need better drainage and infrastructure to handle the water, or else this situation will keep getting worse.”
Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) officials have promised to investigate the cause of the flooding and consider long-term solutions to mitigate future incidents.
Meanwhile, city dwellers have been urged to stay alert and take necessary precautions during the rainy season, as experts predict more downpours in the coming days.
As the city works on resolving the flooding issue, the Tuesday downpour highlighted the urgent need for improved urban planning and flood management in Kampala.
