The Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda, Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among, and her deputy, Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, joined a host of world leaders and dignitaries at St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City today for the funeral service of His Holiness Pope Francis.
The Ugandan delegation, representing President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, participated in the historic ceremony, standing alongside influential figures including former U.S. President Joe Biden and Kenyan President William Ruto, among others.
The funeral, which drew over 250,000 mourners from across the globe, marked the final farewell to a pontiff celebrated for his humility, compassion, and deep commitment to global unity and justice.
Following the ceremony, Speaker Among posted her tribute, expressing the honor of representing Uganda at such a significant global event:
“I was honoured to represent our leader, H.E. Kaguta Museveni, and lead a small delegation from Uganda to bid farewell to the champion of humility, Pope Francis. May we all be inspired by his legacy to live lives that honour God and show love to those around us. Eternal peace grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace.”
Deputy Speaker Tayebwa also shared his reflections on X (formerly Twitter), writing:
“Together with my sister the Rt. Hon. Anitah Among, we joined world leaders and the faithful for the burial of His Holiness Pope Francis today at Vatican. I’m glad I had the chance to bid farewell to my spiritual leader who meant a lot to me personally. May His Soul Rest in Eternal Peace.”
