A swift and coordinated response by police and sister security agencies early Sunday morning successfully foiled a daring robbery attempt at Diamond Trust Bank’s Wakiso branch, resulting in the death of one suspect and the arrest of another.
According to authorities, the incident unfolded around 1:30 a.m. on April 27, 2025, at the bank located in Kkona–East village, near the Wakiso–Busiro Land Zonal offices. Two private security guards assigned to night duty — later identified as Emmanuel Okao (deceased) and Justine Okello (arrested) — are alleged to have orchestrated the heist. Both were employees of G.K.O Security Company.
The plot involved breaking into the bank through the ceiling of the washrooms after removing their security uniforms to facilitate a swift escape. However, the attempt triggered the bank’s alarm system, alerting officers at Wakiso Police Station, who moved in immediately to contain the situation.
Upon arrival, security forces found the bank gate locked and a female security guard, reportedly aware of the robbery plan, hiding in a room at the entrance. When ordered to surrender, the suspects responded by cocking their firearms, prompting police to fire tear gas and live rounds. In the exchange, Okao was fatally shot, while Okello surrendered moments later after witnessing his colleague’s death.
Speaking to the press, Mr. Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, confirmed the recovery of two firearms at the scene and praised the efficiency of the officers involved.
“After ordering the suspects to surrender, police attempted to dislodge them using tear gas. However, the robbers cocked their weapons, prompting the police to respond with gunfire,” he said.
Moses Nanoka, Kampala North Regional Police Commander, commended the timely response, emphasizing that the police’s quick action prevented what could have been a catastrophic loss.
The night’s heavy gunfire, which reportedly lasted from 1 a.m. to nearly 5 a.m., sent shockwaves through the neighborhood.
In a statement released later in the day, Diamond Trust Bank (DTB) reassured its customers, staff, and partners that all assets remained intact and commended the professionalism of Uganda’s security forces.
“We are deeply grateful for the swift and professional actions of the security forces, which helped protect our premises,” the statement read. “We continue to work closely with authorities to ensure a full and transparent investigation.”
As investigations continue, the incident highlights growing concerns over insider threats within private security services and the importance of vigilant, rapid-response policing to protect critical infrastructure.
