Bush War: Meet No-Nonsense Soldier Who Helped Museveni Escape Death In A Deadly Fight

By Our Reporter

Uganda’s political history was shaped significantly by the National Resistance Army (NRA) struggle, and one of its defining moments was the narrow escape of Yoweri Museveni from death during an attack on Masindi.

At the center of this dramatic event was Ahmed Kashilingi, a fearless and strategic commander whose actions changed the course of Uganda’s history.

During the NRA’s mission to attack Masindi, Museveni and his men faced a fierce counterattack by the Uganda National Liberation Army (UNLA), led by the formidable Lt. Col. John Ogole.

With most of the NRA forces away, Museveni was left vulnerable, relying on only 70 fighters. It was Kashilingi’s decisive leadership and combat skills that enabled the NRA to resist the attack and secure Museveni’s escape.

Ahmed Kashilingi, known as RO 040, was a key figure in the NRA bush war, having joined in 1981. His exceptional contributions earned him a place among the 15 senior officers listed in the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Act as of January 1986.

This distinguished group included Mugisha Muntu, Joram Mugume, Ivan Koreta, Jim Muhwezi, Kahinda Otafiire, and others such as Steven Kashaka, Pecos Kuteesa, Julius Chihandae, and Peter Kerim.

Additional names on the list were Fred Mwesigye, Andrew Lutaaya, Gyagenda Kibirango, Samson Mande, and Amin Izaruk.

The courageous actions of these individuals during the bush war ultimately led to the NRA’s victory and Museveni’s ascension to the presidency on January 29, 1986.

For nearly four decades, Museveni has shaped Uganda’s political landscape, largely thanks to the sacrifices of soldiers like Kashilingi.

Kashilingi’s role in the struggle remains a significant chapter in Uganda’s history. His unwavering commitment and tactical brilliance during a critical moment not only saved Museveni’s life but also ensured the success of the NRA’s revolutionary mission, forever altering the nation’s trajectory.
