Tensions flared in Kikunyu Village, Mityana District, on Tuesday as National Resistance Movement (NRM) supporters turned on their own senior party official, Hon. Godfrey Kiwanda Suubi, during the party’s nationwide grassroots elections.
Kiwanda, the NRM Vice Chairperson for the Central Region and a member of the party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC), was met with hostility and jeers from angry residents who accused him of abandoning the community. Eyewitnesses described a scene of chaos as Kiwanda attempted to engage with voters, only to be shouted down and forced to leave without casting his vote.
“You have not helped us! Go away!” shouted several residents, echoing a sentiment of betrayal as the former Mityana North Member of Parliament was hurriedly escorted back to his vehicle under pressure from an irate crowd.
The grassroots elections, which were meant to strengthen the NRM’s local structures ahead of the 2026 general elections, instead laid bare growing discontent within the party’s support base. Locals say they feel neglected by leaders they once rallied behind.
“We supported Kiwanda as our MP and as a CEC member, but ever since he moved to Kampala, we’ve seen nothing from him,” said Jimmy Kato, a resident of Kikunyu. “Now he returns only to interfere in our village elections? We won’t allow it.”
The public rejection is a blow to Kiwanda’s standing within the party and could signal trouble for his future ambitions, particularly his seat on the powerful CEC. Political observers note that such visible grassroots dissent may embolden internal challengers ahead of key party decisions.
The incident underscores a widening rift between the NRM’s national leadership and its grassroots supporters, many of whom are growing increasingly vocal about perceived neglect and unmet promises.
