Police is investigating a tragic road accident that occurred today at approximately 12:40 PM along the Kapchorwa-Mbale highway in Kapchorwa District, resulting in the deaths of nine people and injuries to three others.
According to preliminary police reports, the crash involved a truck that was transporting both cattle and people on its top. The driver is believed to have lost control of the vehicle while descending a slope, reportedly due to brake failure. The vehicle overturned, leading to the fatal consequences.
All the victims were aboard the truck at the time of the accident. Police officers who responded to the scene transported the bodies of the deceased to the mortuary. The injured were taken to a nearby hospital, where they are currently receiving medical treatment.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Traffic Police spokesperson SP Kananura Michael confirmed the incident and urged truck drivers to follow safety regulations.
SP Kananura Michael: “All truck drivers are urged to adhere to safety regulations and refrain from transporting passengers on top of cargo.”
This incident comes amid a broader campaign by the Uganda Police Force calling on citizens to collaborate with law enforcement by reporting reckless or non-compliant motorists. Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of road safety and collective responsibility in preventing such avoidable tragedies.
