Robert ‘Bobby’ Kabonero, beloved son of Ambassador Richard Kabonero and Grace Kabonero, passed away on Friday, May 9, after a prolonged illness. He was 24.
Bobby had been receiving medical care in Nairobi for the past three months. Despite the unwavering efforts of his doctors and the constant prayers of family and friends, he passed peacefully, surrounded by loved ones.
Born on July 31, 2000, Bobby was known for his radiant smile, gentle spirit, and warm, unassuming nature. A promising young professional, he was interning at Uganda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, following in the footsteps of his father — one of Uganda’s most respected diplomats.
Colleagues and mentors described him as disciplined, curious, and deeply respectful — qualities that quickly earned him admiration in the ministry and beyond. He embraced his role with humility and a sincere desire to serve his country.
His untimely passing has sent ripples of grief through Uganda’s diplomatic and political circles, where the Kabonero family is held in high regard. Friends, leaders, and members of the public have expressed profound sorrow and shared heartfelt tributes.
“Bobby was such a gentle and brilliant young man. This is a devastating loss to everyone who had the privilege to know him,” said a family friend.
The Kabonero family confirmed his passing in a statement on Saturday, noting that funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
