Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) for Mityana District, Prossy Mwanjuzi, has won widespread praise after courageously intervening to protect a grieving widow who was forcefully evicted from her matrimonial home by her late husband’s relatives. And this was the 2nd widow she saved, the first was a widow to the late Kintu of Kanamba in Mityana, who was also facing a similar injustice.

Meanwhile, this latest incident, which unfolded in Kibibi Garage A Village, East Ward Parish, Mityana Town Council, saw the widow Sylvia Nalubega, whose husband, Steven Lwere, recently passed away in a tragic accident, thrown out of her home under questionable and unfair accusations.
Lwere’s relatives blamed the widow for not being present at the time of the husband’s death, even though she had travelled to the village for medical treatment. She returned only to find her husband had passed away and was laid to rest over the weekend.

The situation escalated when the family of the deceased, led by a one Mr. Makukulu, forcefully threw out the widow’s belongings from the home she shared with Lwere for over 17 years — and locked the house in which they raised their children together.
In an inspiring show of leadership, compassion, and firmness, Deputy RDC Prossy Mwanjuzi immediately took action upon learning of the incident. She accompanied the widow back to her home, insisting that no one had the moral or legal authority to evict a woman who had stood by her husband for nearly two decades.
“This is a clear injustice. A woman who has shared a life, a home, and children with her husband for 17 years cannot be treated like a stranger. We will not tolerate this kind of abuse and humiliation,” Mwanjuzi declared.
She further warned Mr. Makukulu and all involved family members that their actions had legal consequences and that the full extent of the law would be applied. “Those who attempt to rob women of their dignity and rights will face the wrath of the law,” Mwanjuzi vowed.
Residents of Mityana and beyond have lauded Mwanjuzi for her fearless stand against gender-based injustice and her commitment to defending vulnerable individuals, especially widows who often face mistreatment after the loss of a spouse.
Community leaders and civil society actors have described her as “a voice for the voiceless” and “a true public servant who protects the oppressed without fear or favor.”
Her intervention comes at a time when many widows across the country suffer silently due to outdated cultural practices and unlawful evictions. Mwanjuzi’s swift action sets a bold precedent for local leaders to stand up for women’s rights and uphold justice at all levels of society.
As the story of her courageous stand continues to inspire, Prossy Mwanjuzi has not only restored hope to one widow — she has reminded the nation that justice, when upheld with integrity and empathy, can change lives.
