The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has announced the introduction of new, upgraded National Identity Cards as Uganda prepares for a large-scale mass enrolment and ID renewal exercise.

The revamped ID cards feature enhanced security elements and advanced technology, making them significantly more resistant to forgery and duplication. NIRA says the improvements are designed to align the identification system with modern digital infrastructure, enhancing access to essential services such as banking, healthcare, education, and voting.

Among the key updates are secure biometric integrations, including fingerprints and facial recognition features, which will ensure faster, more accurate, and reliable identification. The cards will also store more detailed personal information, protected by modern encryption standards.

The upcoming nationwide registration drive will cater to:

  • First-time applicants who have never registered before.

  • Citizens needing to renew expired or damaged ID cards.

According to NIRA, the exercise is critical for updating the national database and ensuring that all Ugandans possess valid, secure, and functional identity cards. The process will be free of charge, and efforts are being made to ensure it is accessible, efficient, and citizen-friendly.

NIRA officials have called on all Ugandans to participate in the drive and assured the public that they are working in close partnership with local leaders, schools, and government institutions to streamline the registration process.

The upgraded ID cards are expected to play a pivotal role in Uganda’s digital transformation, supporting more efficient service delivery and enabling the government to plan and implement development programs more effectively.
