Game Over! Kanungu Man Arrested Over Plot To Overthrow Museveni’s Gov’t

By Our Reporter

Security agencies in Kanungu district have arrested a man who appeared in a widely circulated video declaring his intent to overthrow the government of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. The suspect, who identified himself only as Esau, was apprehended on Monday, May 27, following a coordinated operation by the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and the Uganda Police Force.

Esau, believed to be in his late 40s and a resident of Kamutungu village, Nyakatunguru ward in Kihihi town council, is currently being held at Kihihi Police Station, where he is undergoing interrogation.

The arrest follows the release of a 3-minute and 39-second video on Sunday, May 25, in which Esau, dressed in a civilian t-shirt, camouflage trousers, and military-style jungle boots, is seen wielding a machete in a forested area.

In the video, Esau declared the start of what he called a mission to bring an end to the nearly four-decade rule of President Museveni. He claimed his actions were not motivated by hatred or political ambition but framed them as a call for transformative change.

“The time for change has come, whether people want it or not,” he said, urging Ugandans to be vigilant and promising an official statement “within 48 hours.”

He went on to accuse the president of being the chief impediment to democratic progress in Uganda, warning both national and regional leaders to remain alert to “unprecedented events” that he said were on the horizon.

According to local eyewitnesses, the suspect did not resist arrest. Witnesses reported that during his apprehension, Esau quoted Genesis 27 from the Bible — a chapter known for its themes of struggle and inheritance — though the relevance of the reference remains unclear.

Gaddie Rugaaju Ahimbisibwe, the Deputy Resident District Commissioner for Kanungu, confirmed the arrest and stated that investigations are ongoing.

“He is currently in custody and being questioned. We are assessing the video’s content and other statements he made,” said Rugaaju.
