Busted: Nsangi Police Officer Arrested For Destroying Evidence & Manipulating Records To Implicate Innocent Man

By Our Reporter

Detective Sergeant Ngabirano Protasi, a police officer attached to Nsangi Police Station, has been formally charged with destroying evidence and conspiracy to obstruct justice in a high-profile case involving alleged manipulation of police records to frame an innocent man.

The charges were brought forward by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit in collaboration with the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP). Sgt. Ngabirano was arraigned before the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Makindye amid allegations that have sent shockwaves through the law enforcement community.

The case centers around a disturbing incident from January 2025, where Sgt. Ngabirano is accused of conspiring with unknown accomplices to falsely implicate Richard Sewanonda in a case of aggravated robbery.

According to the prosecution, the detective sergeant deliberately removed a key witness statement from official police files at Katwe Police Station in Makindye Division and replaced it with a fabricated statement to incriminate Sewanonda falsely.

This manipulation is believed to be part of a broader scheme involving other parties seeking to illegally dispose of Sewanonda’s contested land while he remains imprisoned.

The arraignment of Sgt. Ngabirano underscores the ongoing efforts by Uganda’s anti-corruption agencies to root out corruption and abuse of power within the police ranks.

A senior investigator commented, “This case highlights how some individuals entrusted with upholding the law may abuse their authority for personal gain or to benefit powerful interests. We remain committed to holding such persons accountable.”

The suspect remains in custody as investigations continue, and authorities urge anyone with further information related to the case or similar abuses to come forward.

This case is a stark reminder of the challenges faced in combating corruption and protecting citizens’ rights amid complex land disputes and abuse of the justice system.
