A wave of grief has engulfed the Metropolitan International University (MIU) community following the tragic death of Gariyo Gibiso, a 24-year-old Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) student, who lost his life in a devastating road accident in the early hours of the morning.

The accident occurred in Mukono under circumstances that remain under investigation by local authorities. While the exact cause of the crash has yet to be confirmed, the impact has been deeply felt across the university and beyond.

Gariyo, who was registered under the number BIT/286/UMC, was widely regarded as a dedicated, humble, and promising student. Peers, lecturers, and university staff have described his passing as an immense loss to the MIU fraternity.

“RIP our own student at MIU. He was doing BIT. Gariyo Gibiso, 24, BIT/286/UMC. He died in a terrible accident this morning in Mukono,” read one of many heartfelt tributes circulating on social media.

Images of the late student, now widely shared online, have drawn an outpouring of condolence messages, with friends, classmates, and alumni expressing shock and sorrow. The MIU administration has issued an official statement offering condolences and pledging full support to Gariyo’s family during this difficult time.

His death adds to the growing list of lives lost on Uganda’s roads, once again spotlighting urgent concerns over road safety, enforcement, and infrastructure.

As the MIU community mourns, preparations for Gariyo’s final send-off are underway, with further details expected to be announced by the family.
