Police in Zambia’s Eastern Province have launched an urgent manhunt for a witch doctor, Yonah Phiri, following disturbing allegations of him defiling two young sisters in separate incidents. The community of Nkhwinjili village in Chieftainess Kawaza area has been left in shock by the revelations.
Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer, Robertson Mweemba, confirmed the incidents, which occurred on June 13 and June 16, 2025. Phiri, a man identified as a witch doctor, is accused of first defiling the 13-year-old girl on June 13. Just three days later, on June 16, he allegedly committed a similar heinous act against her 15-year-old sister.
Defilement, as defined under Zambian law (specifically Section 138 of the Penal Code), refers to penetrative sexual acts with a girl under the age of 16. It is a severe criminal offense in Zambia, with serious penalties including lengthy imprisonment.
The alleged involvement of a witch doctor, a figure often held in a position of influence and trust within rural communities, adds another layer of betrayal to these already grave accusations. While traditional beliefs in witchcraft are prevalent in Zambia, the Witchcraft Act, a colonial-era law, criminalizes the practice of professing knowledge of or practicing witchcraft.
Commanding Officer Mweemba has issued a stern directive to police officers, emphasizing the need to swiftly apprehend Phiri and ensure he faces the full force of the law.
The police are urging anyone with information on Phiri’s whereabouts to come forward and assist in bringing him to justice for these abhorrent crimes against vulnerable children. The community awaits a swift resolution to ensure the safety and well-being of its young members.
