Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, on Saturday held high-level talks with South Sudanese President Salva Kiir at State House in Juba, focusing on strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing regional stability.
Gen Kainerugaba, who is also Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations, arrived in the South Sudanese capital earlier in the day and was received at Juba International Airport by his counterpart from the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces.
Following a brief reception, the Ugandan military chief proceeded to State House for closed-door discussions with President Kiir. The talks centered on deepening military cooperation, addressing regional security challenges, and advancing joint peacekeeping efforts.
After the meeting, Gen Kainerugaba visited the tactical headquarters of Operation Mlinzi Wa Kimya—Swahili for “Silent Guardian”—where he interacted with Ugandan troops and commanders involved in the mission. He was later joined by South Sudan’s Vice President for further deliberations on joint security operations.
Uganda has been a key partner in supporting South Sudan’s stability, notably through the deployment of Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) at Juba’s request in the aftermath of clashes between government forces and rebel groups. The intervention has been credited with restoring calm in Africa’s youngest nation.
President Kiir praised Uganda’s steadfast role in peacebuilding, lauding the UPDF’s contribution to regional security. “We are grateful for Uganda’s unwavering commitment to the stability of our country,” Kiir said.
Beyond security, South Sudan remains one of Uganda’s most important trading partners, importing significant volumes of construction materials, textiles, agricultural produce, and manufactured goods from Kampala.
Gen Kainerugaba reaffirmed Uganda’s dedication to fostering close ties with Juba, describing the partnership as vital for both nations’ prosperity and security. His visit follows recent engagements with regional leaders, including a meeting with Democratic Republic of Congo President Félix Tshisekedi in Kinshasa, aimed at strengthening peace and stability across the Great Lakes region.
