Police in Busoga East have launched a manhunt after seven suspects broke out of court cells at the Mayuge Magisterial area in Katwe Zone, Mayuge District, on August 29.

The fugitives include Juma Swamakomu, Jamali Elapasi, Ryan Tenywa, Hussein Isabirye, and Abdul Mukambwe, who were facing charges of housebreaking, malicious damage, and aggravated robbery. Two others — Juma Mugoya and Fred Kaneene — were awaiting trial for aggravated defilement.

According to court supervisor Abdullah Igulwa, the daring escape happened when both the Grade One and Chief Magistrates were away conducting public hearings on land disputes. All security personnel attached to the court had reportedly accompanied the magistrates, leaving the court premises unguarded.

“The suspects took advantage of the lapse in security and slipped away unnoticed,” Igulwa told police investigators.

Busoga East police spokesperson Michael Kafayo confirmed the incident, noting that joint security teams had been deployed to track down the escapees. He revealed that operations are underway in neighbouring islands, including Jaguzi, Sigulu, and Dolwe, where the suspects are suspected to be hiding.

Kafayo warned that in addition to their original charges, the fugitives will face fresh counts of escaping from lawful custody once re-arrested. He also cautioned that their presence in the community poses a risk of mob justice from victims of their alleged crimes.

“We appeal to the public, especially relatives and associates of the suspects, to share any information that may lead to their capture. The law will catch up with them,” Kafayo said, urging residents to remain vigilant and report any sightings to the nearest police station.

The incident has raised serious questions about court security in the district, as police continue to investigate how such a lapse could have occurred.
