Nepal is facing one of its deadliest uprisings in decades, triggered by a government crackdown on social media and fueled by long-standing frustration over corruption and youth disenfranchisement. At least 23 people have died, including Rajyalaxmi Chitrakar, the wife of former Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal, who was killed when protesters set her home ablaze in Kathmandu’s Dallu area.
The unrest began on Monday after authorities blocked 26 major social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, citing concerns over cybercrime and misinformation. Platforms such as TikTok and Viber remained accessible, prompting critics to decry the ban as politically motivated censorship.
The move ignited widespread anger, particularly among Nepal’s youth, who face high unemployment and limited opportunities. What began as online protests quickly escalated into a broader anti-corruption movement, with demonstrators targeting government buildings and the residences of political leaders.
By Tuesday, the situation had intensified. Protesters stormed the Federal Parliament, setting parts of it on fire, and attacked the homes of prominent politicians, including Prime Ministers Sher Bahadur Deuba and K.P. Sharma Oli. In Dallu, a mob set fire to former PM Jhalanath Khanal’s home, trapping his wife, who later died at Kirtipur Burn Hospital.
In response to mounting pressure, Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli resigned on Tuesday. The government imposed a curfew and lifted the social media ban in an attempt to restore order, but violence continued. Authorities report at least 22 dead, over 340 injured, and numerous arrests.
Dubbed the “Gen Z Uprising,” the protests reflect deep-seated political instability in Nepal. Since the monarchy’s fall in 2008, the country has seen 14 governments, contributing to widespread public mistrust. The youth, who form a large segment of the population, are demanding accountability and systemic reforms.
The death of Rajyalaxmi Chitrakar underscores the human cost of the crisis. As Nepal navigates these turbulent times, the coming days will be crucial in determining whether the country can chart a path toward lasting peace and meaningful reform.
