The Busiro East parliamentary contest has taken a dramatic turn after the Electoral Commission (EC) officially disqualified National Unity Platform (NUP) flag-bearer and singer Mathias Walukagga for failing to meet the minimum academic requirements for nomination.
According to a formal communication issued and signed by EC Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi, the documents Walukagga presented during nomination were invalid by the time of submission.
“The certificate Candidate Walukaga Mathias presented for nomination had, by 23rd October 2025, clearly expired. Accordingly, Candidate Walukaga Mathias lacked the requisite minimum formal qualifications for the elective office of Member of Parliament as stipulated under Section 4(1)(c) of the Parliamentary Elections Act, Cap. 177. Candidate Walukaga Mathias therefore stands denominated,” the EC statement reads.
Walukagga, a first-time contender, had been fronted by NUP after the party dropped long-serving MP Medard Lubega Sseggona during the primaries. The move sparked unrest among some party members who questioned the transparency of the internal process.
Following his loss in the primaries, Sseggona declared he would contest as an independent, setting the stage for a tense three-way race until today’s disqualification.
With Walukagga now out of the picture, the Busiro East contest enters a new phase. Sseggona’s independent bid gains momentum, while NUP faces renewed pressure to explain its vetting procedures after endorsing a candidate with questionable qualifications.
Political analysts say the development is likely to deepen internal friction within NUP’s local structures and could reshape voter dynamics in the constituency as campaigns intensify.
The Electoral Commission has yet to announce whether NUP will be allowed to front a replacement candidate.
