Uganda’s democracy has steadily matured over the years, anchored in the resilience of its people and the leadership of the National Resistance Movement (NRM). As the country prepares for the 2026 General Elections, it is important to reflect on past experiences and draw lessons that will help us safeguard peace, transparency, and the will of the majority.

During the 2021 General Elections, there were isolated but concerning incidents at some polling stations where irregularities were reported. In a few areas, particularly parts of Busoga and Buganda, some polling officials and opportunistic actors were accused of altering results on declaration forms or intimidating known supporters and agents of the NRM. Such actions undermined public trust and were a disservice to Uganda’s democratic journey.

These incidents must never be repeated. Elections should be decided by the ballot, not by intimidation, manipulation, or misinformation. As we approach 2026, all Ugandans—regardless of political affiliation—must commit to peaceful participation, respect for institutions, and adherence to the law.

Recent calls by some opposition figures encouraging supporters to remain at polling stations under the guise of “protecting votes” have raised legitimate concerns. While citizen vigilance is important, it must always operate within the framework of electoral laws and security guidelines. Polling stations are governed by clear rules, and only accredited officials, agents, and security personnel should undertake official roles.

As leaders within the NRM, we call upon our supporters across the country to turn out in large numbers, vote peacefully, and remain vigilant without fear or intimidation. The victory of our Presidential Candidate, H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni Tibuhaburwa, alongside our Members of Parliament and local leaders, will be secured through lawful, transparent, and democratic means.

We also commend the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, for emphasizing the importance of peace, order, and discipline during the electoral period. His message serves as a timely reminder that Uganda’s stability is a shared responsibility.

Moving forward, we encourage electoral authorities to enhance transparency, including strict verification of declaration forms and strengthened accountability at polling stations. Every vote must count, and every result must reflect the true choice of the people.

On 15th January 2026, we urge all Ugandans—and especially NRM supporters—to come out peacefully, exercise their constitutional right to vote, and support President Museveni as he continues to protect the gains of peace, stability, and socio-economic transformation.

To our friends in the opposition, we affirm that competition should be peaceful and respectful. Uganda belongs to all of us, and its future must never be put at risk.

There will be no fear, no intimidation, and no retreat from defending democracy—peacefully and lawfully. The voice of the majority wanainchi and bazzukulu will prevail.

For God and My Country.
