The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has once again demonstrated its efficiency and unwavering commitment to wildlife conservation following the successful rescue of a serval cat in Seeta Village, Busukuma Division, Wakiso District.
The wild cat had accidentally fallen into a fish pond belonging to Mr. Bazira Henry, creating concern among residents and property owners. Upon receiving the alert, UWA’s specialized Problem Animal Capture Unit swiftly mobilized to the scene under the leadership of Sgt. Oswald Tumanya.
Exhibiting professionalism, precision, and care, the team safely retrieved the serval alive, ensuring minimal stress to the animal while also safeguarding the surrounding community. The operation highlighted UWA’s preparedness and technical expertise in handling wildlife emergencies, particularly in areas where human and wildlife habitats increasingly intersect.
After the rescue, the serval was transferred to the Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre (UWEC) for veterinary examination and monitoring before its eventual return to the wild.
Serval cats, known for their long legs, sharp hunting instincts, and role in controlling rodent populations, are an important part of Uganda’s ecosystem. Incidents like this underscore the growing need for continued vigilance and collaboration between communities and wildlife authorities.
Residents praised UWA for its swift intervention, noting that the authority’s timely action prevented possible harm and reinforced confidence in its ability to manage wildlife-related incidents.
The rescue stands as yet another testament to UWA’s dedication to protecting Uganda’s wildlife while fostering peaceful coexistence between people and nature.
