A quiet learning environment at Ggaba Early Childhood Development Programme turned into a scene of horror on Thursday after four young children were brutally killed in a violent attack that has sent shockwaves across the city.

Police have arrested Okello Christopher Onyu as the prime suspect in the killings, which occurred inside a classroom at the daycare centre. Authorities say the victims, all pupils at the facility, were stabbed and died on the spot.

According to preliminary findings, the suspect had visited the centre two days prior, seeking admission for his child. He was reportedly asked to return on April 2 to complete the process.

On the fateful day, Okello returned and engaged with the school administrator before paying admission fees for the child. Moments later, in a sudden and unprovoked act of violence, he allegedly forced his way into a classroom and attacked the children with a knife.

“It is reported that after completing the admission process, he stormed the class and stabbed four children. They died instantly,” said Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala.

At the time of the attack, about 14 children were present at the centre, which has been operating for approximately two years. The remaining 10 children were safely evacuated and later handed over to their parents.

The bodies of the deceased were taken to the city mortuary for postmortem examination.

The Inspector General of Police, Abas Byakagaba, visited the scene shortly after the incident, accompanied by Kampala Metropolitan Police Commander Frank Mwesigwa. The police leadership condemned the attack and assured the public that thorough investigations are underway.

The motive behind the killings remains unclear, with investigators working to establish what may have driven the suspect to target the young victims.

Residents and parents in Ggaba have been left in deep shock and grief, as questions mount over how such an attack could occur in a facility meant to provide care and safety for children.

Police say Okello is currently being held at Kabalagala Police Station as inquiries continue.
