Easter celebrations across the North Kyoga Region remained largely peaceful, but a violent late-night attack in Apac District has raised fresh concerns over security in schools and surrounding communities.
According to police reports, on the night of April 5 at approximately 10:00 p.m., an estimated 15 assailants armed with pangas and knives stormed Apac Seed Secondary School. The attackers targeted students who had responded to suspicious movements reported near the girls’ dormitory.
In the ensuing chaos, seven students sustained injuries, three of them seriously. Authorities confirmed that officers from Apac Central Police Station responded swiftly, securing the scene and evacuating six of the injured to Apac Main Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment.
The victims have been identified as Ojok Ivan Okabo, Alele Jonathan, Oyile Jonathan, Ocen Sam, Awany Bruce, Odongo Ronald, and Odur Bonny. Some of the injured students have reportedly indicated that they are able to identify certain attackers, providing a potential lead for investigators.
Police say investigations are ongoing to establish the motive behind the attack and to ensure all perpetrators are apprehended.
Meanwhile, in Kampala, security agencies have intensified operations targeting rising cases of street crime, particularly phone snatching and attacks on motorists.
In response to public outcry and viral social media footage, joint operations conducted by the Uganda Police Force and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) around the Clock Tower area led to the arrest of 18 suspects. The suspects were allegedly linked to coordinated robberies and violent thefts in the area.
Authorities revealed that the group had established a base along the Nakivubo Channel in Katwe, specifically in Katenda Zone. The makeshift structures used as hideouts have since been demolished by the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA).
During the operation, security teams recovered several exhibits, including knives, a hammer, and suspected narcotics.
Further coordinated sweeps carried out on April 6 in West Zone, Base Zone, and Kibuye I Parish in Makindye Division resulted in the arrest of over 100 additional suspects. All individuals are currently in police custody and are expected to face court proceedings.
Security officials have urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, emphasizing that both rural and urban operations will continue to ensure safety.
While the Apac school attack underscores vulnerabilities in community security, authorities maintain that the swift response by law enforcement and ongoing crackdowns in urban centers demonstrate a strengthened commitment to combating crime nationwide.
