Authorities in Iowa are investigating a devastating series of fatal shootings that left six people dead before the suspected gunman took his own life during an encounter with police.
The violence unfolded on Monday in Muscatine, a city located about 50 miles southeast of Cedar Rapids, sending shockwaves through the local community.
According to Muscatine Police Chief Anthony Kies, officers were first called to a residence where they discovered four people who had been fatally shot.
As the investigation intensified, police launched a search for the suspected gunman, identified as 52-year-old Ryan Willis McFarland of Muscatine.
Authorities later located McFarland on a trail within the city. While officers were speaking with him, he died by suicide, bringing the manhunt to an end.
“While talking to Ryan Willis McFarland, he took his own life,” Chief Kies told reporters during a news conference.
Investigators believe the victims were relatives of McFarland. As police continued their inquiries, two additional men were found dead at separate locations elsewhere in the city.
One victim was discovered inside his home, while another was found dead inside a business establishment, according to authorities.
Officials have not yet released the names of the victims or provided further details about their identities as family members are being notified.
The motive behind the shootings remains under investigation.
The tragedy has left residents grappling with grief and disbelief as authorities work to piece together the events that led to the killings.
“Today I simply do not have the words, this act of evil and what it has done to our community,” Kies said.
Investigators are currently processing multiple crime scenes and conducting interviews as part of the ongoing investigation. Police have urged anyone with information that could assist detectives to contact the department’s major crimes unit.
The shootings mark one of the deadliest incidents in recent memory for the Muscatine community and have prompted an outpouring of sympathy for the victims’ families.
Authorities said additional information will be released as the investigation progresses.
