Breaking: Lukwago To Be Released From ‘Basement’ TODAY!

    By Swift Reporter

Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has announced that opposition politician and People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) president Erias Lukwago will be released and handed over to police today, Tuesday.

In a post shared on his X account on Tuesday, Gen. Muhoozi revealed that he had decided to release Lukwago following persuasion from his wife, Charlotte Kainerugaba.

“My beloved wife Charlotte has convinced me to release the criminal Lukwago. I will release him because of my love for her,” Muhoozi posted.

In a subsequent post, the Chief of Defence Forces added: “Today, I will release this IDIOT to police. I have run out of diapers. Never test me again!”

Lukwago was seized from his residence in Wakaliga in a pre-dawn operation carried out by armed men dressed in both military and civilian attire.

The arrest triggered a political storm, with opposition leaders and human rights activists demanding answers about Lukwago’s whereabouts and the legal basis for his detention.

On Monday, witnesses reported seeing security operatives arrive at Lukwago’s home in two vehicles, one of them without registration plates. Residents said the operatives scaled the perimeter wall before entering the property and taking the former Kampala Lord Mayor away.

At the time, neither police nor military authorities officially acknowledged holding Lukwago.

Shortly after reports of the arrest emerged, Gen. Muhoozi posted on social media that he had “captured a fool and taken him to the basement,” though he did not identify the individual he was referring to.

The following posts later clearest indicated that the opposition politician was indeed being held under the control of security personnel linked to the Chief of Defence Forces.

Lukwago’s arrest drew condemnation from the People’s Front for Freedom, which accused the government of using security agencies to intimidate political opponents.

The party described the operation as an attack on democratic freedoms and the rule of law, insisting that it would not be deterred from challenging the government.

The arrest also raised questions because it occurred at a time when Lukwago was reportedly preparing legal action against Gen. Muhoozi. According to PFF officials, the veteran lawyer was in the process of serving court documents on the army commander before he was taken from his home.

Lukwago has been actively involved in the legal defence of veteran opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye, who is facing treason-related charges. As one of Besigye’s lawyers and one of the government’s most vocal critics, Lukwago has remained at the centre of several politically sensitive legal and constitutional battles in recent years.

While opposition figures have suggested that his legal and political activities may have contributed to the operation against him, no official explanation has been provided by security agencies.

By Tuesday afternoon, it remained unclear whether Lukwago had already been transferred to police custody, what charges he may face, or where he would be detained after his release from what Gen. Muhoozi described as the “basement.”
