What began as a modest Office of the National Chairman (ONC) intervention for many households in Wakiso and Luwero districts has evolved into thriving businesses, job creation opportunities and renewed hope, as beneficiaries of President Yoweri Museveni’s wealth creation initiatives continue to register remarkable success.
A monitoring tour conducted by the Office of the NRM National Chairman (ONC), led by Manager Hajat Hadijah Namyalo Uzeiye, revealed the transformative impact of presidential poverty-eradication programmes on ordinary Ugandans who received support in 2023.
The exercise assessed how beneficiaries have utilized the assistance provided under initiatives championed by President Museveni and coordinated through the ONC, with findings showing significant growth in household incomes, business expansion and improved livelihoods.
From 200 Chicks to a Multi-Million Poultry Enterprise
In Kikutwe Village, Kira Municipality, Wakiso District, Tamale is among the many Ugandans whose lives have been transformed through the programme.
Three years ago, he received 200 broiler chicks, poultry feeds capable of supporting 400 birds and vaccines through the ONC. Today, he manages a poultry enterprise with a flock of 700 birds, generating approximately Sh12 million in revenue every 35 days.
Using unfinished rental structures on his two-acre property as poultry houses, Tamale turned what many initially considered a small intervention into a sustainable business.
“With God’s grace, we raised the broiler chicks successfully. The feeds and vaccines greatly supported us. We sold the first batch and reinvested the proceeds into a second batch. Today, our flock has grown from 200 to 700 birds,” he said.
His story reflects the philosophy behind President Museveni’s wealth creation agenda, which emphasizes equipping citizens with productive assets and skills to generate long-term income.
Single Mother Builds Thriving Business
In Gala Village, Katikamu Sub-county, Luwero District, another success story unfolded before the ONC team.
Liz Wasswa, a single mother, received 200 broiler chicks, 11 sacks of poultry feed and related supplies through the programme. Through careful management and reinvestment, she has expanded her poultry operation to 1,500 birds.
Today, the enterprise employs four workers and provides a steady source of income for her family.
“After meeting all expenses, including school fees for my child, I am able to save about Sh1 million every month,” Wasswa said.
Her achievement drew praise from Namyalo, who said women and single parents should never view their circumstances as barriers to economic empowerment.
The ONC manager noted that Wasswa’s progress demonstrates how government interventions can empower vulnerable groups to become self-reliant and contribute to local economic growth.
Beneficiary Diversifies Into Indigenous Poultry Farming
Also in Gala Village, John Tandebwa has taken his poultry venture a step further by diversifying into indigenous chicken farming.
After initially receiving 200 broiler chicks and related support, he invested his earnings into local chicken rearing, a business he says offers stronger market demand and better returns.
Today, he owns 225 hens and 25 cocks and has established a profitable enterprise serving customers directly from his farm.
“I chose local breeds because their eggs are in higher demand and fetch better prices. A tray of local eggs sells at about Sh20,000 compared to Sh10,000 for exotic eggs. Local birds are also more valuable, with roosters selling at around Sh50,000 and hens at Sh35,000,” Tandebwa explained.
He now earns about Sh400,000 every month from farm sales and credits the programme for giving him the foundation to build a sustainable source of income.
“President Museveni and Hajat Namyalo owe me nothing more because they have already empowered me,” he said.
Hajjat Namyalo Praises The InitiativeÂ
Speaking during the monitoring exercise, Namyalo commended beneficiaries who had effectively utilized the support extended to them, noting that many have progressed from job seekers to employers.
She said the success stories witnessed across Wakiso and Luwero demonstrate the effectiveness of President Museveni’s poverty-eradication strategy when beneficiaries embrace hard work, discipline and proper resource management.
Namyalo encouraged Ugandans, particularly young people and women, to focus on wealth creation opportunities rather than relying solely on politics and government employment.
“The President’s message has always been clear. Government can provide the initial support, but lasting transformation depends on individual commitment, innovation and hard work,” she said.
While applauding the progress made, beneficiaries also raised concerns affecting the sustainability of their enterprises, including the rising cost of animal feeds, poor-quality vaccines and limited market access.
Namyalo pledged to forward the concerns to relevant authorities for consideration, emphasizing that addressing such challenges would further strengthen the impact of the government’s wealth creation programmes.
