Prof. Muganga Hails Theater Legend Aloysius Matovu As Victoria University Sponsors His Latest Production

Victoria University Kampala has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting Uganda’s creative industry and cultural heritage through a strategic partnership with renowned actor, playwright, and theater icon Aloysius Matovu Joy ahead of the premiere of his latest stage production, NEKA: MAAMA TAKIRWA (Mother is Supreme).

The celebrated playwright paid a courtesy visit to Victoria University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Lawrence Muganga, where the two held discussions on the transformative power of theater, cultural storytelling, and the importance of preserving Uganda’s artistic heritage for future generations.

The meeting also highlighted the vital role mothers play in shaping society, a central theme of Matovu Joy’s upcoming production, which pays tribute to motherhood and family values.

During the meeting, Prof. Dr. Muganga reiterated Victoria University’s commitment to supporting local talent and providing platforms that empower creatives to make meaningful contributions to society.

As part of this commitment, Victoria University has partnered with Aloysius Matovu to support the successful staging of NEKA: MAAMA TAKIRWA, underscoring the institution’s growing role in advancing Uganda’s cultural and creative industries.

Prof. Dr. Muganga praised Matovu for his outstanding contribution to Uganda’s theater industry and his role in using art as a tool for education and social transformation.

“I recently had the privilege of meeting my longtime friend and one of Uganda’s most celebrated theater legends, Aloysius Matovu Joy,” Prof. Muganga said.

“For decades, his work has inspired, educated, and entertained Ugandans. Through productions staged at Pride Theatre and beyond, he has used theater to address social issues, promote positive values, and shape public discourse. His contribution to Uganda’s cultural landscape is truly remarkable.”

The Vice Chancellor noted that Victoria University’s support for the production aligns with its broader mission of nurturing innovation, creativity, and experiential learning.

“At Victoria University, we believe in supporting individuals whose work positively impacts society. When Mr. Matovu approached us, we were honored to partner with him.
