Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has said that veteran politician and women’s rights activist Miria Matembe has been arrested, following days of uncertainty over her whereabouts after security operatives raided her home in Luzira.
In a post published on his official X account on Sunday afternoon, Gen. Muhoozi wrote:
“Matembe has been arrested for impersonation. Mzee only has one sister. Auntie Kajubiri.”
The army chief did not provide further details about where Matembe was allegedly arrested, the circumstances surrounding the arrest.
Earlier, Gen. Muhoozi posted a series of messages suggesting that Matembe was in custody. Responding to a social media user who identified her by name, he wrote:
“That one. I have her too.”
In another post shortly before the announcement, he wrote:
“I have forgotten the name of that very, very ugly woman who used to call herself Mzee’s sister. What was her name?”
The developments come after days of concern over Matembe’s whereabouts. Her family had earlier said she had not been seen since security personnel raided her residence in Luzira.
Her husband, Nehemiah Matembe, previously told journalists that the family had lost contact with her following the operation, adding that she had not returned home.
The reported arrest also follows an escalating public dispute between Matembe and Gen. Muhoozi. In recent days, the former Ethics and Integrity Minister criticised the Chief of Defence Forces, accusing him of undermining state institutions and calling on him to show greater respect for Ugandans.
Meanwhile, this also comes few hours after two prominent civil society leaders and lawyers, Sarah Bireete and Eunice Musiime, were reportedly detained by security operatives. Sources indicated the pair were suspected of having information about Matembe’s whereabouts.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
