The Chief of Defence Forces and Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has held a high-level meeting with the leadership of Nation Media Group (NMG) Uganda as efforts continue to resolve the closure of the company’s media outlets, including NTV Uganda and the Daily Monitor.
The meeting took place at the Special Forces Command (SFC) Headquarters in Entebbe and brought together key figures from both the government and the media organization.
Among those in attendance were NMG owner Rostam Aziz, his son Saam Aziz, and Georgia Mutagaywa, Chief of Staff at Taarifa Limited, the parent company of Nation Media Group Uganda.
Also present were veteran journalist and Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) leader Andrew Mwenda, as well as the Acting UPDF Director of Defence Public Information, Col. Chris Magezi.
The discussions followed the recent closure of NMG Uganda’s offices by security agencies after Gen. Kainerugaba directed that the company’s operations be suspended.
Gen. Kainerugaba had accused the media house of conducting what he described as a sustained blackmail campaign against the government and its leaders, while also alleging that its editorial coverage advanced opposition and foreign interests at the expense of Uganda’s national interests.
According to a statement issued after the meeting, the parties reviewed concerns raised by the government regarding what it considers biased and malicious reporting by the media group.
The statement added that the owners of Nation Media Group committed themselves to pursuing “a more patriotic, balanced and objective approach” to journalism.
The engagement is part of ongoing discussions aimed at resolving the standoff between the government and the media company.
Following the meeting, Gen. Kainerugaba revealed on his social media platforms that he would submit a report on the outcome of the discussions to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who is expected to make the final decision regarding the reopening of NMG Uganda’s premises.
The outcome of the consultations is expected to shape the next steps in resolving the dispute between the government and one of Uganda’s leading media organizations.
