Just In: Gen Muhoozi Shakes Up SFC Leadership, Brig Gen Asaph Mweteise Takes Over As New Commander

The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and Senior Presidential Advisor on Special Operations (SPA/SO), Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has appointed Brig Gen Asaph Mweteise Nyakikuru as the Acting Commander of the Special Forces Command (SFC).
In the same announcement, Brig Gen Nyakikuru was elevated to the acting rank of Major General, with both the promotion and appointment taking immediate effect.
The development was confirmed by the Acting Director of Defence Public Information, Col Chris Magezi, who said the changes are part of the UPDF’s ongoing leadership transitions within the elite unit.
Acting Maj Gen Nyakikuru replaces Maj Gen David Mugisha, who is expected to leave the command in the coming months to undertake studies at the National Defence College (NDC) abroad.
Before his latest appointment, Acting Maj Gen Nyakikuru served as the Deputy Commander of the Special Forces Command, a position he assumed in June 2024 after succeeding Brig Gen Charity Bainababo.
He brings to the role a wealth of operational and command experience acquired over years of service in Uganda’s elite military formations. His previous assignments include serving as Commander of the 2nd Special Forces Group (2SFG) and leading several SFC commando units.
Throughout his military career, Acting Maj Gen Nyakikuru has played a key role in planning and executing specialized operations, overseeing presidential and VVIP protection, coordinating tactical missions, and strengthening the training and readiness of Special Forces personnel.
His appointment comes as the Special Forces Command continues to play a critical role in safeguarding Uganda’s strategic national interests, providing high-level security, and executing specialized military operations.
The elevation to acting Major General underscores the confidence placed in Nyakikuru’s leadership and extensive operational experience as he assumes command of one of the UPDF’s most elite formations.
