The Uganda Prisons Service has addressed an incident where a group of youths attacked one of its buses in an attempt to free a suspect who had just been apprehended for theft. The dramatic event unfolded last week on April 18th in Bunyolwa, Zirobwe, within Luwero District.

A video of the incident, which quickly went viral online, captures the intense scene. The group of youths, including bodaboda riders, forcefully raided the prison bus with registration number UG 0419U. Shouting at the top of their voices, they pulled out one of the prison warders and repeatedly punched him while others cheered them on. The situation escalated further as they smashed the rear window of the bus before it sped away.

According to Frank Baine, the Uganda Prisons spokesman, the bus was transporting prison staff to attend the burial of a relative of one of the warders, Fred Kasozi. During the funeral, the suspect allegedly snatched a phone from one of the prison guards, leading to his arrest.

However, while attempting to transport the suspect to a nearby police station, the bus came under attack by the suspect’s colleagues. They turned violent in an effort to rescue him from custody. Fortunately, local law enforcement authorities and community leaders swiftly intervened, bringing the situation under control and resolving the matter peacefully.
