This week, the State House Anti Corruption Unit arraigned two Obongi District Local Government officials before the Anti-Corruption Court on charges of Abuse of Office and Embezzlement.
The officials are; Senior Human Resource Officer-Rasul Burhan Gobe and the then Ag. Chief Finance Officer-Adaku Alfred.
According to State House Unit, the two, together with the Chief Administrative Officer, who is still at large, abused their authority and embezzled over 100M by irregularly making overpayments to pensioners and existing salary earners in the district, after which they would demand a refund of the overpaid amount.
”After the commencement of the investigations, all the money was recovered and paid to the recovery account of the government,” says the Unit.
Embezzlement in Uganda has been a persistent issue, affecting both public and private sectors. In 2012, the United Kingdom suspended financial aid to Uganda due to a corruption scandal where millions in donor funds were allegedly embezzled within the office of the prime minister.
In recent arrests, six officials of Gulu City Council were arrested for allegedly embezzling over 200 million Ugandan shillings in local revenue.
Embezzlement undermines public trust, hampers development, and perpetuates inequality. Efforts to combat corruption remain crucial for Uganda’s progress.
Uganda also faces the challenge of corruption, a pervasive issue that affects various aspects of society.
The 2021 Corruption Perceptions Index ranks Uganda 27 out of 100, indicating a significant corruption problem.
