Tragic Accident In Amuria District: Five Traders Killed as Truck Plunges into River

By Frank Kamuntu

At least five traders lost their lives when a truck, transporting their produce, overshot a bridge in Amuria District and plunged into a river.

The incident occurred as the traders were en route to Obalanga Cattle Market in Kapelebyong District. The driver of the truck, identified by registration number UAU 429R, reportedly lost control while approaching Alereke Bridge, situated between Abia and Asamuk sub-counties.

The accident occurred around 6 a.m. along the Soroti-Amuria Road. The victims were trapped under bags of produce, exacerbated by the stagnant water in the bridge.

Tragically, five colleagues lost their lives on the spot due to drowning, while three others sustained critical injuries.

East Kyoga Region Police commander Damalie Nasuha, present at the scene with a team of officers, assured a comprehensive accident report after evacuating casualties. The deceased have been taken to Amuria General Hospital, while those in critical condition were transferred to Soroti Regional Referral Hospital.

This marks the third fatal accident in Amuria involving trucks transporting produce to local markets. In 2022, another accident claimed the lives of 13 traders from the Bugisu sub-region who were traveling to Adipala cattle market.
