Ministry Of Gender, Labour, And Social Development Launches Transformative Initiative To Empower Women Entrepreneurs

By Jamillah Oluka

The Ministry of Gender, Labour, and Social Development has introduced a groundbreaking initiative, the Grow Project, aimed at empowering women entrepreneurs in Butambala and neighboring districts. This transformative project, funded by the World Bank, seeks to support women in boosting their businesses and creating employment opportunities, marking a significant step forward in Uganda’s economic development.

The coordinator of the Grow Project praised the initiative as a pioneering effort in Uganda. “Women face challenges in business, and we hope that the Grow Project will help them to boost their businesses,” the coordinator stated, highlighting the project’s potential to address longstanding barriers faced by women entrepreneurs.

Fred, the Talent Specialist from the Private Sector Foundation Uganda, elaborated on the project’s inclusive selection criteria. “The selection is open to women with existing small businesses. They can borrow up to 200 million shillings at low-interest rates to enhance their ventures,” Fred explained. This financial support is designed to provide much-needed capital for women to expand their businesses and thrive in a competitive market.

Honorable Aisha, the Woman Member of Parliament for Butambala, urged women to seize this opportunity to improve their livelihoods. She emphasized the importance of the timely disbursement and effective utilization of funds before 2027. “This is a unique chance for women to transform their lives and contribute to our nation’s prosperity,” Honorable Aisha remarked.

The Resident District Commissioner (RDC) underscored the project’s commitment to transparency and accountability. He noted the implementation of stringent monitoring methods to curb corruption, contrasting this initiative with past efforts like the Emyooga and Youth Fund. “The government’s support for women, who play a crucial role in family management, is commendable,” the RDC stated, reinforcing the project’s promise to uplift women entrepreneurs and foster economic growth.

The Grow Project represents a significant milestone in empowering women entrepreneurs, promoting economic stability, and driving growth in Uganda. With robust financial backing and a focus on transparency, this initiative is set to transform the lives of many women, paving the way for a brighter future for their families and communities.
