2026 Plans Out! FDC Najjanakumbi In Panicky Mode As Besigye’s Katonga Faction Moves To Form New Party

By Frank Kamuntu

Delegates of the Katonga Road-based splinter group of the Forum for Democratic Change party have endorsed a call to form a new political vehicle ahead of the 2026 general elections. However, they have set themselves six months to unveil this new political vehicle, which indicates that the splinter group is yet to resolve its dissolution with the mainstream FDC.

The group spokesperson Ibrahim Sssemujju Nganda exuded confidence that the new political outfit would leave the Najjanakumbi group with a great vacuum.

In March, the faction led by Kampala Lord Mayor Elias Lukwago embarked on national consultative meetings to chart the way forward after they broke away from party leadership at Najjanankumbi.

The faction has since held consultative meetings in Busia, Wakiso, Rukungiri, Masindi, Hoima, Lira, Gulu, Mityana, Masaka, Kotido, Soroti, Amuria, Kitgum, West Nile, Ankole, Kigezi and Mbale districts among others.

In some of these consultative meetings, Besigye told the leaders that liberating the country shouldn’t be tagged on the formation of the new political party.

He however explained that a political party is needed to accommodate two groups within the struggle including those who need party tickets to contest for elective positions and others who need a change of leadership.

Besigye added that it’s difficult to save the FDC Najjanankumbi because it’s captured by the state and they can only do so after removing President Yoweri Museveni from power.

Meanwhile, Nandala Mafabi, Secretary General FDC Najjanankumbi faction, has continuously urged members of the Katonga FDC faction to reunite with them and work together.

He has been calling on all former members to return to the party, engage in digital registration, and actively participate in national leadership.

“Members, our party welcomes everyone. Please encourage those in the Katonga faction to return, as the party needs them. Additionally, I urge anyone interested in contributing to the country’s leadership to register with the party so that their records can be properly captured,” says Nandala.
