Deadly Spot! Minibus Carrying Schoolchildren Crashes At Nkumba Traffic Lights

By Frank Kamuntu

A minibus transporting pupils from Trust Infant Primary School in Mpmedde, Nakasake District, crashed at the Nkumba traffic lights—a location that tragically claimed the life of lawyer Raphael Okiot in April this year.

According to eyewitnesses, the driver of the minibus (registration number UBA 839B) lost control after failing to brake upon approaching the first set of traffic lights at the Nkumba stage. The incident occurred as the driver exited the Entebbe-Kampala Expressway.

The minibus initially collided with a black Toyota Hilux government vehicle (registration number UG 2402 C). Despite attempting to maneuver across the road, the driver hit the middle concrete separation and flipped the vehicle.

Mr. Tony Felix, a teacher at the school, reported that there were 58 pupils and eight teachers on board the minibus. They were en route to the airport for a tour, followed by a visit to the Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre (UWEC).

Fortunately, no lives were lost. Six pupils sustained minor injuries and received first aid at the nearby Sab Medical Centre.

Residents who assisted in evacuating the pupils noted that the crash scene has become a blackspot. Drivers coming from Kampala often fail to notice the first set of traffic lights and only become aware of the second set as they approach Nkumba University stage and accidents normally come out of this confusion.

Notably, on April 19, 2024, another incident occurred at the same traffic lights when a coaster driver lost control and collided with other vehicles. Just two days prior, a cement mixer truck driver also lost control, hitting a road barrier and causing it to fall onto a saloon car, resulting in the tragic death of lawyer Raphael Okiot.
