UG Police: Over 60 Perish In Accidents, 308 Injured In One Week

By Frank Kamuntu

During the week of September 8th to 14th, 61 people lost their lives in road crashes, while 308 sustained injuries.

According to Uganda Police Traffic Directorate spokesperson Kananura Michael, the fatalities included 24 pedestrians, 17 motorcyclists, nine motorcycle passengers, five drivers, and two others.

He says the major causes of these crashes were unsafe overtaking and speeding.

In Uganda, common causes of road accidents include:

  1. Poor Road Conditions: Many roads are poorly maintained, with potholes and inadequate signage.
  2. Reckless Driving: Speeding, aggressive overtaking, and disregard for traffic rules are prevalent.
  3. Vehicle Maintenance: Many vehicles are not well-maintained, leading to mechanical failures.
  4. Driver Fatigue: Long hours of driving without breaks can impair attention and reaction times.
  5. Pedestrian Behavior: Lack of proper pedestrian crossings and high foot traffic can contribute to accidents.
  6. Inadequate Traffic Law Enforcement: Weak enforcement of traffic regulations allows unsafe driving practices to persist.
  7. Weather Conditions: Rain and fog can reduce visibility and increase the risk of accidents.
