All Vehicles Diverted As Gov’t Announces Total Closure Of Karuma Bridge

By Frank Kamuntu

General Katumba Wamala, the Minister of Works and Transport, has announced that Karuma Bridge will be closed to all traffic starting Monday, September 23, 2024.

”This closure will allow the contractor to begin demolishing the concrete deck in preparation for major restoration work, which is expected to take approximately three months. The bridge, built in 1963, has exceeded its intended lifespan and requires substantial repairs,” says Katumba.

UNRA spokesperson Allan Ssempebwa has outlined alternative routes for motorists. Those traveling from Kampala to Gulu or West Nile should use the Luwero—Kafu—Masindi—Paraa (Murchison Falls National Park) route to reach Pakwach or Gulu via Olwiyo. Conversely, travelers from Gulu or West Nile can use the same route to get to Kampala.

For motorists heading to Lira, the Rwenkunye—Apac route via Masindi Port Ferry is an option. Additionally, the Iganga—Nakalama—Tirinyi—Pallisa—Kumi—Soroti—Lira route is available for those traveling to Lira and back.

The Karuma Bridge was first closed temporarily in August 2023 due to damage that raised safety concerns. This closure was part of a broader effort to assess and address structural issues to ensure the bridge’s future safety for commuters.
