Uganda has recorded another case of mpox in a Nakasongola prison in central Uganda.

The prison’s spokesperson Frank Baine Tuesday said the case is being managed in line with established protocols, adding that the patient had been isolated and receiving treatment.

The male inmate was recently transferred to the prison for serious offenses. “We suspect he came in with it but that’s being investigated. Unfortunately, the prisoner couldn’t be given bail since he’s being held for murder,” Baine told reporters.

The Nakasongola district is facing a growing health crisis, with 21 confirmed cases of mpox and nine additional suspected cases currently under investigation.

Dr. Bernard Lubwama, an epidemiologist from the Ministry of Health, said a significant number of infections are linked to landing sites (ports), where physical contact is frequent. He emphasized the need for behavior changes in these areas.

People at landing sites are prone to close-contact activities like shaking hands, and hugging, he said, explaining: “We are stressing the importance of regular hand washing and minimizing physical contact to control the spread.”

Uganda’s health officials said the total confirmed mpox infections in the East African country are 41, adding that no death has been registered among the confirmed cases.

According to the WHO, the mpox continues to pose a serious threat, with 16 countries currently affected in Africa.
