AFCON: Uganda Cranes Hammer S.Sudan 1-0

By Frank Kamuntu

Uganda Cranes squeezed past South Sudan at Namboole Stadium to maintain their perfect home record in the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Qualifiers.

Bevis Mugabi scored his first goal in national colors, bundling in from close range after South Sudan goalkeeper Juma Jenard Amuk spilled Jude Ssemugabi’s header from an Allan Okello delivery.

Mugabi’s 47th-minute strike proved decisive as Uganda remained joint top with South Africa, both teams tied on seven points.

The Cranes, who had drawn 2-2 away to South Africa and secured a 2-0 home win against Congo, found it challenging to break down a resolute South Sudan side.

The visitors created some notable chances despite missing key players like captain Peter Manyang, Tito Okello, and Rashid Toha.

Alfred Leku was set up through on goal after Aziz Kayondo lost possession. Still, Cranes goalkeeper Ismail Watenga made a crucial save to deny the former Arua Hill and Express forward.

Paul America Jawa also missed a good delivery from Rashid Okocha, while Halid Lwaliwa cleared off the line to deny Pal Paul Puk in a tense finale.

Uganda dominated for large periods, but clear-cut chances were limited. Jude Ssemugabi came close, and Rogers Mato had a penalty appeal turned down as the Cranes struggled before finding a breakthrough.

The Cranes will now visit South Sudan on Tuesday in Juba, aiming to edge closer to an AFCON return after missing out in the last two campaigns.
