Naguru: Lions Club Of K’la East, Mengo Hospital Offer Free Eye Checkups & Treatment To Over 300 People

By Frank Kamuntu

The Lions Club of Kampala East (LCKE), in collaboration with Mengo Hospital, have today provided free eye checkups and related healthcare assistance at a camp held at St. Jude Catholic Church, Naguru.

This initiative attracted hundreds of people from Kampala and the surrounding areas, including those with serious optical cases and those with minor issues.

Swift News understands that this initiative was held under the Club’s mission to provide essential healthcare services to underprivileged communities and to promote healthy living.

In her remarks at the camp, the President of Lions Club Kampala East, Hilda Mugenyi, noted that this Club is a chapter of Lions Clubs International, the world’s largest service organization with 1.4 million members in over 49,000 clubs globally. The club is dedicated to serving the local community through a variety of service activities, including health, education, and environmental initiatives.

She said this is the fourth year holding these annual camps and in all the years people have been turning up in large numbers, thanks to the Club members who have continued to selflessly contribute to this good cause.

”Yes, today we are here to assist our brothers and sisters, parents and children who have vision/eye issues. For your information, we are part of Lion’s International, and we believe in serving a world in need by at least doing one act of kindness at a time and this explains very well where we get the courage to do this,” said Ms Mugenyi Hilda.

She further noted that in today’s camp, they registered over 300 people who turned up and all of them received free services. ”We are happy people turned up and as you can see our doctors from Mengo Hospital are very busy handling one by one. Therefore, I thank our good members and partners who made this possible through their physical and financial contributions. I want to use this opportunity to rally Ugandans to join Lions Club Kampala East so that we can serve more needy people in our communities.”

Beneficiaries who received these free services praised the big-hearted members of Lions Club Kampala East for their generosity. Ms Adong Santa Maria revealed that at this camp she got services like; comprehensive eye examinations, hypertension screening and diabetes sensitization since these are primary contributors to eye defects.

”They have also taught us about environmental conservation because for one to be healthy you must be living in a good environment, so they have given us trees to go and plant them. Also, they have given us glasses… I am extremely happy because I have been with these eye issues for quite a while, I was still looking for money to go to the hospital, so God has done it for me…just know I am on the moon now,” said an excited beneficiary Ms Adong who resides in Nankulabye.

Another beneficiary, Mr Barage Dison from Banda said he got to know about this camp via an advert on CBS radio in one of its morning shows.

”The other day I was on my radio and I heard an advert about this camp and because I was struggling with a lot of vision challenges I couldn’t wait to be here today. I can’t thank enough the Lion’s Club for the free support they have extended to us. May God bless them so much and give them provision to continue supporting more needy Ugandans,” said Dison.
