Traffic came to a standstill on the Mbarara-Kabale highway after a fuel tanker accident led to a massive explosion. The tanker, heading towards Kabale from Kampala, overturned at Kyanamira corner in Kyanamira sub-county, Kabale district, and burst into flames around midday on Saturday.
Eyewitnesses said that the tanker lost control while negotiating a turn, rolled into a trench, and immediately ignited. The flames quickly spread to nearby kiosks and homes, creating widespread panic. The driver, who managed to escape the vehicle, suffered severe burns and was taken to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital for urgent treatment.
This incident recalls a similar tragedy in April 2022, when another fuel tanker rolled and caught fire just 100 meters from the current scene. That driver survived but sustained burns.
The Mbarara-Kabale highway, connecting Uganda to Rwanda at the Katuna border and to the Democratic Republic of Congo via Bunagana in Kisoro district, remains blocked as authorities work to clear the area.

1. **Maintain a Safe Distance**
– Immediately move away from the accident scene. Fuel tankers carry flammable substances that can ignite or explode without warning.
– Establish a safe distance of at least 100 meters, or more if there’s already a fire or signs of leakage.
2. **Alert Authorities**
– Contact emergency services as soon as possible, providing the exact location and details of the accident.
– Inform the fire department, police, and emergency medical responders, as specialized response is required.
3. **Warn Others**
– Caution others nearby about the potential danger and urge them to move away.
– Avoid unnecessary crowding around the scene, as this can increase the risk if an explosion or fire occurs.
4. **Avoid Sparks or Flames**
– Fuel vapors are extremely flammable, so avoid any activity that might produce a spark.
– Turn off car engines, avoid using mobile phones near the tanker, and stay away from any electronic devices.
5. **Identify Leaks and Flames**
– Be vigilant about identifying any fuel leaks or visible flames around the tanker. If you see leaking fuel, be sure to communicate this to emergency services.
6. **Do Not Attempt a Rescue Yourself**
– Only trained professionals should approach the tanker for a rescue. They have the necessary equipment and knowledge to handle the situation safely.
7. **Evacuate the Area If Necessary**
– If you are near structures or people that could be at risk, begin evacuating the area if you can do so safely. Encourage others to follow suit calmly and quickly.
8. **Follow Emergency Responders’ Instructions**
– Once emergency responders arrive, follow their instructions and cooperate with evacuation procedures if implemented.
