“Stop Chewing Fwaaah, Mask Your ‘Horny Ka Thing’ To Curb AIDs”-ONC’s Namyalo Cautions Bazzukulu, Rallies Ugandans For Aviators’ Run

By Frank Kamuntu

Office of the National Chairman (ONC)  manager Hajjat Namyalo has rallied Ugandans to warm up for aviators’ run aiming to support HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention.

The Aviators’ Run Initiative Uganda, in partnership with The AIDS Support Organization (TASO), will host a charity marathon on Sunday, December 8th, at the UMA Show Grounds, aiming to raise UGX 1 billion to prevent mother-to-child transmission by supporting expectant mothers living with HIV/AIDS, and promote youth mindset change through nationwide HIV prevention camps.

SPA/PA Hajjat Hadijah Namyalo Uzeiye, ONC Manager, has urged Ugandans to participate, emphasizing the importance of responsible living and the dangers of unprotected sex.

“This is not just a marathon; it is a movement to support our mothers and protect our youth. We all have a role to play in fighting HIV/AIDS, and through this initiative, we can save lives while spreading hope,” she said after meeting the team.

Winners in the 5km, 3km, and 2km races will receive a scenic flight around Kampala.

The event runs from 7:00 AM to 2:00 PM, offering a chance to contribute to a meaningful cause while enjoying a fun-filled day.

HIV/AIDS In Uganda

  • Prevalence: Uganda has made significant progress in controlling HIV, but the epidemic is still present. The adult HIV prevalence rate is around 6%, with some estimates varying slightly over the years.
  • New infections: The number of new HIV infections has been steadily decreasing in Uganda, though the country still sees about 50,000 new HIV cases each year.
  • Treatment: Over 1.5 million people in Uganda are living with HIV, and a large proportion of those are on antiretroviral therapy (ART), with coverage surpassing 80% for those eligible.
  • Key populations at risk: Key populations, such as sex workers, men who have sex with men (MSM), and individuals with multiple sexual partners, face higher risks of HIV transmission.

HIV/AIDS In Africa

  • Prevalence: Sub-Saharan Africa remains the region most affected by HIV/AIDS. The global prevalence rate for adults in sub-Saharan Africa is around 4.7%. While some countries have made significant progress in combating the epidemic, it remains a major public health issue.
  • New infections: Sub-Saharan Africa accounts for about 60% of the global total of new HIV infections, with 1.5 million new cases reported in 2022 alone.
  • Treatment: Access to ART has dramatically increased over the years, with more than 20 million people across Africa receiving HIV treatment as of 2023. The coverage is improving, but significant challenges remain in rural and hard-to-reach areas.
  • Mortality: AIDS-related deaths have decreased due to the widespread availability of ART, but the region still reports a large number of deaths, particularly in resource-poor areas.
